Over the weekend of Nov. 9-10, the West Coast Katz girls soccer club recorded a draw and two more State Cup victories.
In league play against San Ramon, the Katz fell behind 3-1 at the start of the second half. However, they rallied and fought back for a 4-4 draw.
The following day, the Katz faced San Ramon again in the second round of State Cup play.
Outstanding defense from Bella Hansen, Addison McNeil and Taylen Dayak held San Ramon scoreless throughout the game. Forwards Cailey Sasaki, Taylor Conover, Sophia Rodriguez, Natalie Miller, Sydney Stephens and Alexis Zamora had multiple shots on goal. Midfielders Karly Martins and Delaeni Grajeda were set up every time San Ramon tried to cross in the half.
In the second half, Martins gave West Coast a 1-0 lead after a handball penalty just between the top of the box and the half field line. Before the final whistle blew, Martins scored again with assistance from Sophia Rodriguez to secure the 2-0 victory.
Next, the Katz won 5-1 in the second game of State Cup Round 2. Conover’s passes set up Zamora, Sasaki, Rodriguez, Miller, and Stephens for multiple scoring opportunities. West Coast dominated possession for most of the game, with midfielder Martins producing a hat-trick with assists from Conover and Zamora. Hansen, McNeil and Dayak anchored the defense. Insurance goals were tacked on by Zamora (assisted by Stephens) and Miller in the 5-1 win.
