Members of Moms 4 Housing are likely to be removed in the next few days from the investor-owned house on Magnolia Street they’ve been squatting in since November.

The group of women who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, took over the house to call attention to the Oakland’s homelessness crisis. There were over 150 supporters there on Monday night, many of who linked arms on the front steps of the home. Others who were closer to the scene talked to the women inside the home as some of the mom’s children played in their upstairs bedroom.

The real estate company Wedgewood, who owns the property, filed an eviction notice which a judge upheld Friday.

Moms 4 Housing founder Dominique Walker, who’s living in the house with her children, ages 1 and 5, along with several other women and children, said they won’t go.

“We are practicing nonviolent civil disobedience,” Walker said. “We are not running. We are staying here. We are not aggressors, but we are not running away either.”
