Pet fosterers needed

In response to Santa Clara County’s mandate to shelter in place, Humane Society Silicon Valley March 17 temporarily suspended adoptions and other services that require direct contact with the public. The adoption center at the Sunnyvale Petco is closed for the duration of the order.

The Humane Society is moving shelter animals into foster homes to make space to support their rescue partners while the “shelter in place” order is in effect.

“With the suspension of public adoptions, we urgently need more foster volunteers on an ongoing basis,” the nonprofit said in a statement. It is crucial that we add enough capacity to continue serving as a lifeline for other shelters in need.”

Those interested in fostering an adoptable animal should fill out the survey at https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5508265/New-Foster-Interest.

Eviction moratorium

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on March 24 unanimously passed an urgency ordinance establishing a temporary and limited moratorium on evictions that will apply countywide.

The ordinance prevents evictions for failure to pay rent during the COVID-19 public health crisis. The ordinance is immediately effective and will take precedence over municipalities’ less stringent ordinances.

The ordinance lasts through May 31 and applies to both residential and small business commercial rentals. It applies to renters who can document “substantial loss” as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

A full text of the ordinance is on the March 24 agenda, item 16, at http://sccgov.iqm2.com/Citizens.
