On Nov. 10, the West Coast 01/02 girls soccer team traveled to Placerville for a Champions League match against Placer United ’01. Both teams exchanged the lead and fought hard, but the game eventually ended in a 3-3 draw.
In the opening minutes of the game, Mia Mendoza set up Heather Tarabini, who was fouled driving to the goal. Jaden Hall stepped up and converted the penalty kick into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Midfielders Fayth Hinojosa, Meredith Hagler, Ashleigh Ward and Kaitlin Carlton moved the ball quickly and controlled the tempo throughout the first half. Tarabini used her speed to add another goal before halftime, but Placer also responded with a goal of its own to make the score 2-1 at the half.
In the second half, Placer came out aggressively and scored two quick goals to take a 3-2 lead. Defenders Ari Moore, Leyla Gantz, Jordan Brown, Holly McRitchie, and Julianne Munoz limited the damage and gave West Coast a chance to tie in the last few minutes of the game. Tarabini slipped past a defender and nailed a shot from outside the 18-yard line to tie the match at 3-3 before the final whistle blew.
Next up, West Coast will resume NPL Champions League play in the NPL College Showcase followed by the SilverLakes College Showcase over Thanksgiving weekend.
Girls 15U
The West Coast Krush ’04 girls soccer team closed out the 2019 Fall Season with a 4-3 victory at home over the Pleasanton Rage ’04 Orange.
The Krush dominated the first half, scoring three unanswered goals. Six minutes into the game, Francesca Ramos and Susan Contreras teamed up to steal the ball off a Rage throw-in. Contreras came away with the ball and crossed it to Kaya Brown, who sent a quick touch pass to Hailey Rodaer, who finished with a diving kick inside the box. Rodaer scored her second goal of the game later in the half, this time with an assist from Alexis Berlin, after Berlin intercepted a Rage goal kick.
Later in the first half, Kimmie Keller’s throw-in found Taylor Salsman, who passed up to Julia Morfin. Morfin then found Contreras, who found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Rage countered in the second half, scoring three goals to tie the game. But Contreras put the Krush back on top for good with six minutes remaining. After intercepting a Rage pass, Contreras blasted a shot from well outside the 18-yard box that sailed high, just under the crossbar and into the net, securing the 4-3 victory for West Coast.
The Krush finished in third place overall for the 2019 Gold League Fall Season with a 5-2-2 overall record. It will continue with State Cup group stage play, followed by the Silver Lakes Fall College Showcase.
