Students in the Fremont Union High School District who are experiencing food insecurity during quarantine have been getting help from the district and the community at large to make sure they don’t go hungry while sheltering in place.
April 14, Cupertino city staff coordinated and executed the staffing, transportation and delivery of 1,100 meals for distribution to families with students at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale and Homestead High School in Cupertino. Lazy Dog and Pineapple Thai—both located in Main Street Cupertino—each provided 550 meals.
In a separate effort, Fremont High School staff, under the leadership of longtime teacher Michelle Wagner, is raising money for students and families hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. As of April 6, the campaign had raised $12,700 from more than 160 donors, comprised of alumni, staff and community members.
Wagner, who teaches biology for English learners, said the fundraising effort will continue for as long as it’s needed.
“The kids we are supporting were really struggling before the COVID chaos arose, so things have gotten exponentially worse in recent weeks,” she added.
Donations are being accepted via Paypal to aescaler@gmail.com or via Venmo @michael-stephanie-fujii. For information on where to mail a check, email Wagner at michelle_wagner@fuhsd.org.
Cupertino Together
De Anza College students in need are among those receiving free hot meals through Cupertino Together, a community-centered emergency fund founded by the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber created the fund to help the most vulnerable citizens in the Cupertino area, who include seniors and low-income families as well as De Anza students. A $20 donation buys a meal from a local restaurant.
As of April 20, Cupertino Together had received donations for 770 meals; the Chamber’s goal is to buy 5,000.
