Sporting proposition
While sports fields throughout the city are open for leagues and summer camps to use, individual residents remain barred from using the spaces for unofficial games or social purposes. Representatives from local sports programs can email FieldReservations@sanjoseca.gov to reserve a field for practice, games or camp activities.
Strong summer camps
Next week marks the start of the second session of San Jose Strong summer camps for kids ages 5-12. The session runs Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., through Aug. 7. To apply for financial assistance, visit the Almaden or Willow Glen community center. The deadline for registration and scholarship applications is July 18, but space may run out before then due to social distancing restrictions. Visit SJRegistration.com to register.
Bee aware
Tune in to the event San Jose Public Library users are buzzing about: Uncle Jer’s Traveling Bee Show, streaming online July 11 from 11 a.m. to noon. The program will teach viewers the ABeeCs of pollination and honey production, as well as how to care for the critical insects. The event, hosted by the Santa Teresa Branch Library, is open to all residents; register at tinyurl.com/VirtualBees to receive a Zoom link to the event.

WILLOW GLEN/ROSE GARDEN>>Several District 6 school organizations got a boost from the San Jose City Council last month. Councilmembers approved a $5,000 grant for the Willow Glen Education Foundation to offset the revenue lost by the cancellation of their annual auction fundraiser; a $10,000 grant for the Hoover Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association to subsidize efforts including campus improvements and student programs during the COVID-19 pandemic; and a $5,000 grant for the Willow Glen Performing Arts Booster club to offset money lost due to the cancellation of their planned Roaring ’20s Gala fundraiser.
