PACIFICA — A 40-year-old man who was killed after driving the wrong way on Highway 1 and colliding with another vehicle has been identified by San Mateo County Coroner’s Office as Rydell Manahan, of San Pablo.
Shortly after 3 a.m. on Jan. 16, Manahan, who was driving a Dodge Charger, entered the southbound lanes of Highway 1 at Manor Drive, going the wrong direction and collided with a Mercedes SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Manahan was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman riding in the passenger seat of Manahan’s Charger and the driver of the Mercedes — a man believed to be in his 50s — were both transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
It is unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the fatal collision.
The fatal collision marks a troubling trend for California Highway Patrol, which tallied more than 25 wrong-way crashes in 2019.
Just one day following the collision that caused Manahan’s death, a woman was killed after driving the wrong way for at least 5 miles on Interstate 880 and crashing head-on with another vehicle near Campbell.
