Virtual field trips
As students finish up the school year with virtual instruction, many teachers and community members have come up with creative ways to break up the everyday routine. The San Jose Public Library now offers virtual field trips, allowing teachers to take their students on online trips to the library. Librarians will host story times and help students and teachers get acquainted with the library’s online services. Field trips can be scheduled at www.sjpl.org/visit.
Perked-up parks
As some San Jose parks loosen “shelter in place” restrictions to allow more visitors, the city has relaunched its scheduled park maintenance services. Workers have begun reducing overgrowth and will continue to mow all of the city’s parks and sports fields. Visitors and maintenance staff are advised to continue to practice social distancing.
PPE disposal
While many San Jose residents have been working from home during the statewide mandatory shelter in place order, workers in the city’s Environmental Services Department have been making the rounds, collecting garbage, recycling and other waste from residents’ homes. City officials are asking residents to use caution when disposing of personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves, that may be contaminated in order to reduce the risk to sanitation workers.
Covering water workers
Workers at the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility and the San Jose Municipal Water System received a large delivery of reusable cloth masks from several federal agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The 1,000 face masks will be used to protect workers at the facilities, who are essential and have continued to work during the statewide mandatory shelter in place order.
Museum from Home
Although it remains closed to visitors, the San Jose Museum of Art’s virtual “Museum from Home” includes a photo gallery, a history of the museum, high-definition photos of the exhibits on display and more. To enjoy the museum from the comfort of your couch, visit sjmusart.org/museum-from-home.
